EDWIN EDS: Japanese denim between heritage and craftsmanship
Since 1947, EDWIN has been one of the brands that have contributed to writing the history of Japanese denim. Initially specializing in the import, washing, and repair of American jeans, the brand then developed its own vision of jeans: more precise, more comfortable, and better suited for everyday wear.
In 1961, EDWIN officially became a brand. Two years later, it launched the 359BF, a foundational model in its history. These jeans marked an important milestone with their 16 oz denim, their focus on washing techniques, and their famous rainbow selvedge, which has become one of the brand's iconic details.
A series true to EDWIN's DNA
The EDWIN EDS series is a direct continuation of this heritage. It adopts the codes of traditional Japanese denim: a dense fabric, a lively texture, natural irregularities, and a true attention to detail.
Made on old shuttle looms, EDS denim takes its time to come into existence. These machines, slower and narrower than modern tools, give the material that unique relief sought after in selvedge jeans: a raw, expressive fabric, made to evolve with time.
The rainbow selvedge, a historical signature
One of the strongest details of the EDS series is its rainbow selvedge. This colorful edge directly references the 359BF from 1963, one of EDWIN's first great domestic jeans.
This discreet detail tells a lot: it connects the EDS series to the brand's origins, to its taste for precision, and to its desire to make Japanese denim a product in its own right, combining heritage, innovation, and identity.
A fabric designed to last
The EDS fabric notably uses Hakushu cotton, a rare Japanese cotton cultivated since the Edo period. Integrated into the denim's construction, it provides suppleness and comfort, while retaining the raw and authentic spirit of Japanese jeans.
Manufacturing is carried out in Japan, with particular attention paid to seams, reinforcements, pockets, and finishes. Each detail has its role: strength, hold, comfort, but also the ability to develop a patina over time.
Jeans that evolve with you
An EDWIN EDS is not meant to stay static. It is designed to live, shape, fade, and tell a different story depending on the person who wears it.
Creases, rubbing, nuances, and signs of wear gradually become unique. This is the whole point of good denim: the more it is worn, the more character it gains.
The series also includes details such as the Hinomaru Leather Tag, placed in the coin pocket, a symbol of this personal patina that reveals itself over time.
A precise cut, designed for everyday wear
The EDS series also places great importance on proportions. Some models are offered in multiple inseam lengths to preserve the natural drape of the jeans, without disrupting the balance of the silhouette.
The idea is simple: to offer well-constructed, easy-to-wear jeans, while remaining true to the spirit of Japanese denim. Raw, rolled up, or worn more fitted, they adapt to everyone's style.
EDWIN EDS: the luxury of time
With the EDS series, EDWIN reminds us that jeans are not just an item you buy. They are a material you bring to life.
Between shuttle looms, rainbow selvedge, Japanese cotton, Made in Japan manufacturing, and details designed to last, EDWIN EDS celebrates a simple idea: true luxury is time.
Jeans that take time to be made, that take time to age, and that eventually become truly yours.
