THE BRAND :
Ab sportartiklar Oy established a small workshop in downtown Helsinki, where locally sourced birch wood was transformed into its first products: javelins, skis, and discus throwers. Running shoes were also developed, eventually landing on the feet of Hannes Kolehmainen, the first "Flying Finn," and Ville Ritola.
The company's name was changed to Karhu, which means bear in Finnish. The "Flying Finns" dominated tracks around the world, making Karhu running shoes a household name.
Continuing its tradition of efficiency-driven innovation, Karhu develops the first patented "Air Cushion" midsole system for its running shoes.
Founded in 1916 in Helsinki, the Flying Finns, which offered sports equipment, became Karhu (bear) in 1920. They later launched running shoes that dominated the Olympic Games and thus resold their famous 3-stripe brand. The brand is now established with shoes featuring innovative technologies that offer comfort, support, and style.
