The Birkenstock family history
BIRKENSTOCK is rooted in the family's dedication to the art of orthopedically inspired handcrafted shoemaking. Over the centuries, the precious experience acquired has become a treasure trove that is passed down, cultivated, and flourishes from generation to generation.
Founded in 1774 by Johann Birkenstock, the family business didn't really begin to grow until a century later. In 1896, Konrad Birkenstock designed the first shoe with an insole that contoured and supported the foot (almost orthopedic and then sold to medical professionals). It was this innovation that would make the brand famous and make it synonymous with healthy footwear for the feet.
